Funny Face featured some real-life top models, incuding “Dovima” (Dorothy Virginia Margaret Juba). She was absolutely delightful as Marion, the ditzy but good-natured model who was trying to look highbrow but really preferred to read comic books. (“That is a piece of sculpture by ltsabuchi. Look at it as if you understand it. As if it understands you. See? No, that’s not the way we look when we’re thinking of ltsabuchi.”) This look was so iconic that they even made a doll of it!
The most striking feature of this dress is, of course, the neckline. I wonder how they got the stiff little tabs at her collarbones to stay in place. Possibly they have a little wire or something in them. I also like the effect created by wearing long black gloves that meet the sleeves. And it’s really interesting to get a glimpse “behind the scenes” of a photo shoot and see how the dress is just clipped on with clothespins!
